Idig

KÖNIGSBACH

VDP.GROSSE LAGE

The Idig is one of the most excellent vineyards of the Palatinate. Through our monopoly ownership, it represents the core of our estate. The wines produced here are among the style defining wines of the category “Großes Gewächs” and are celebrated worldwide year after year. As a court chamber estate of the Palatine electors, our vineyard, which was at that time a high lordly estate, was first mentioned in documents as early as the 14th century. The monopoly size of 4 hectares in a prime location, an absolute peculiarity, is due to the possession of the Palatine Counts for over 400 years. The vineyard slopes steeply, by Palatinate standards, to southeast. However, a gentle wind constantly flows from the Stabenberg down through the Klausental, which with its drying effects, steadily keeps the grapes healthy. The Idig rests on a mighty limestone rock massif, which was formed from limestone deposits after the Oberrheingraben (Upper Rhine Moat) collapsed in the Tertiary period. The topsoil consists of terra fusca, formed from lime and clay. Thus it contains countless limestones, but also some basalt, which was brought to the vineyard from the Forster Pechsteinkopf about 150 years ago by the von Buhl family, the owners at the time.

Riesling

With 2.8 ha, the major part of our vineyard area in Idig is planted with Riesling. Here are old vines, some of which are ungrafted, but also younger vines. The best pieces are the Kalkbuckel (limestone hump) around the pavilion, as well as the Rolandsberg and the adjoining terrace.
