IDIG

KÖNIGSBACH

VDP. Große Lage

The Idig is one of the most excellent locations in the Pfalz region. Thanks to our monopoly-like ownership, it constitutes the core of our winery. The wines produced here are among the style-defining wines in the Grosses Gewächs category and are celebrated around the world year after year. Constituing the “Hofkammergut” (court chamber estate) of the Electors Palatinate, our – at the time lordly – vineyard was first mentioned in a document as early as the 14th century. The monopoly-like size of 4 hectares in one of the best locations, is absolutely extraordinary and thanks to the Count Palatine’s exclusive ownership for over 400 years. For the Pfalz region the vineyard slopes comparatively steeply to the south-southeast. However, a softly blowing breeze constantly flows down from the Stabenberg through the Klausental Valley, keeping the grapes healthy for a long time thanks to its drying effect. The Idig rests on a mighty limestone massif, which formed from limestone deposits after the collapse of the Upper Rhine rift in the Tertiary. The topsoil consists of terra fusca, which emerged from limestone and clay. In the topsoil you can find countless limestones, but also some basalt, which was carried into the vineyard from the site Forster Pechsteinkopf by the von Buhl family, the then owners, about 150 years ago.
